Truth#1 I am a very big Korn appreciator and, have been since they first graced my ears long ago AND will probably download all of their albums until their are none due to SHEER NOSTALGIA but..
Truth#2 I am no longer a Korn 'fan'
If someone, ANYONE asked me to go to a Korn concert, back in the early 2000s, I would have aggressively nodded my head and squee'd a little after dirtying my shorts, but now.. meh. And this is coming from someone who had listened to "Take a Look in the Mirror" or "See You on the Other Side" at least once a day for a nearly a decade.
While what I'm writing to you now seems like a rather negative start to this review, I'll clarify my facts. Korn recently has gotten into the habit of leading us on with a great prerelease singles like "Narcissistic Cannibal","Get Up!", or 'Evolution" and delivering a lack luster full album afterward. (Notice I didn't mention anything about Korn III? Good.) Korn is also one of those bands; that after a decade or two have an 'identity crisis' or get bored of their sound of expression or want to experiment/go thru a phase, whatever you wanna call it and thats all fine. Artists have every right to do that and I'm sure many great bands have gone thru the same reconstructive process and been fine coming out the other end although I can't think of any right now*.
Korn probably, sadly isn't going to be one of those bands. Post-"Get Up!" success has made Korn decide to do something rather.. odd. Path of Totality is like a great Korn album got forcefully curb stomped and violated by Mr. Skrillex, which is, I'm sure, exactly the way Korn wanted that shit to go.
BOTTOMLINE & HIGHLIGHTS: Path of Totality is definitely out to steal the heart of all those new Dubsteppers out there, all the while gracing us old Korn fans with little niblets of their old noise and power. I guess I'll have to make due with the tasty bits of "Remember Who You Are" for now.
1.) 8. Let's Go (feat. Noisia)
2.) 11. Bleeding out (feat Feed Me)
3.) 6. Burn the Obedient (feat Noisia)
P.S. Korn, if you happen to read this, I'm still hard for you and your lyrics and sound fuck my mind good but, I don't think I can have the same feelings if you use Skrillex as a crutch anymore. I mean he's short enough as it is.
Regretfully yours,
Rex
